Design and Portability

The Xiaomi Mi comes with a matte black aluminium frame – like many other electric scooters. But, the design doesn’t look like other e-scooters. There is something unique about the sleek, simple design and a nice shape that stands out.

The longevity of the product is taken care of by the corrosion-resistant coating on the frame that makes it immune to extreme temperatures, rain, and frost. The Xiaomi Mi is durable and sturdy, yet extremely portable. It simply folds up and can be towed or carried.

Teenagers and adults will have no problem carrying the scooter. Once you reach the end of the road, fold and fasten the handlebar to the rear wheel guard, then carry the scooter and it's ready to go. The scooter weighs just 12.2 kg (26.9 lb) but can carry as much as 100 kg (220 lb).

Speed, Distance, and Battery

Xiaomi Mi's 250W hub electric motor gives the rider a maximum cruise speed of 25 kph (15.5 mph). The lithium battery takes up to 5 hours to charge but gives a generous riding range of 30 km (18.6 miles), which is higher than most e-scooters currently available.

You don’t have to avoid slopes or inclined surfaces. The rotational force or torque, around 16 Nm (11.8 Lb-Ft), created in Xiaomi Mi is enough to climb an incline of up to 11 degrees.

The mini display panel between the handlebars tells you battery information as well as current speed, lights info, etc. The scooter slows down and eventually stops when the battery completely dries up. Xiaomi Mi users can save power by switching to the power-saving mode, which will automatically reduce the maximum speed limit to just 18 kph (11.2 mph).

The Brake System

The Xiaomi Mi electric scooter has two brakes: the rear disc brake and the front eABS. Having two brakes makes stopping more simple and controlled, regardless of the surface you're riding on. The rear light doubles as a brake light to alert those behind you.

The pneumatic tyres are a poor substitute for actual suspension on roads with potholes. That said the two 21.5 cm (8.5”) air-filled tyres offer enough shock absorption for a smooth ride even on damaged roads and the anti-slip treads give extra grip on slippery surfaces. Check the firmness of the tyres once every two months and maintain a tyre pressure of 50 psi.

Certification and Safety

The Xiaomi Mi e-scooter complies with the Industry Canada licence-exempt RSS standard and part 15 of United States FCC rules and regulations. In 2017, the e-scooter won the IF Design Award and the Red Dot Award.

By now you must be well aware that safety is of paramount importance to Xiaomi. One of the many safety features in the Mi electric scooter is the bright and powerful headlight that illuminates the path ahead, up to 6 metres.

We would also recommend that riders keep their feet on the deck while riding, avoid acceleration on a downward slope, maintain a speed of 5 to 10 kph (3 to 6 mph) on uneven and bumpy surfaces, and avoid riding the scooter in heavy rain.

Bluetooth and Mi Home App

Using a Bluetooth device with the Mi Home App you can connect to the scooter to see the distance travelled, speed, battery power, and other statistical data.

Riding Experience

The Xiaomi Mi is a fun scooter to ride. The air-filled tyres offer added suspension and grip on the roads. This is especially useful on wet surfaces.

We often advise against riding an electric scooter in the rain, but the Mi is fairly versatile. With anti-slip tyre tread and two powerful brakes, the scooter can hold its own on wet surfaces.

The push-button on the handlebar allows the rider to set a comfortable speed. The two ride modes are normal and power-saver mode. The only difference being that power-saver mode limits the scooter's max speed to 18 kph (11.2 mph).

Final thoughts

The Xiaomi Mi electric scooter is among the best we've seen. It's sleek, fast, durable, and has a good range and battery. Though it received bad press in the 2018 recall of 10,000+ scooters, it has since become one of the most popular scooters on the market.

In our eyes, it's well-deserved an overall rating of 9/10.
