Speedrid fat tire electric bike

Speedrid on Amazon

The Speedrid fat tire e-bike is very similar to the ENGWE EP-2 but it’s a little bit cheaper - around $150 USD (£110 / 130€) cheaper. It retails at around $850 USD (£610 / 720€).

Its standout features are the 10 cm x 50 cm (4” x 20”) fat tyres and the fact that it folds down. This means extra grip on those cold, wet days and the ability to handle rough terrain. And, of course, the portability that comes with an e-bike that can fold in half.

This Speedrid e-bike has a max speed of 38 kph (24 mph) and can go as far as 32 km (20 miles) on electric power alone. The bike’s 500W brushless motor is powered by a removable 36V 12.5Ah Lithium-ion battery.

Like other similar electric bikes, the Speedrid fat tyre bike has 5 pedal-assist levels to adjust to the riding surface. Of course, it works as a leg-powered push bike as well and has a 6-speed gear system.

The Speedrid fat tire e-bike is ideal for the modern commuter or for people wanting to ride on rough terrain, including sand and snow.

  • Pros
  • Fat tyres
  • Compact/foldable
  • LCD display

Why do we like the Speedrid fat tire e-bike?

It looks good, it’s practical and it’s powerful. That sums it up! It’s ideal if you’re looking for an electric bike with fat tyres that folds down. The added carry rack over the rear tyre is a nice addition too!

ENGWE EP-2 500W

9/10

Engwe EP2 e-bike

ENGWE on Amazon

The ENGWE EP-2 foldable e-bike is the monster truck of electric bikes as you can see. It’s the pimped-out version of its predecessor.

But be warned, its price tag means it’s not for the faint-hearted. The ENGWE EP-2 will cost you $1,000 USD (£720 / 835€). For that, you get fat 10 cm (4”) wide tyres, a max speed of 35 kph (22 mph), and a durable aluminium alloy frame.

Without pedal assist, the EP-2 can go up to 30-35 km (18-21 miles) - a very decent range for an e-bike. This is due to its 500 W motor and 48V lithium-ion battery.

For a foldable, electric mountain bike, it certainly stands out. No, it’s not your traditional mountain bike, but it can handle almost any terrain without issue.

A downside would be its weight. Although it can fold down to fit into the trunk of your car, we don’t consider it portable. It’s heavy. It weighs 32 kg (70 lb) and so isn’t comfortable to carry up stairs or take on the metro/subway. But it’s not designed for the city commuter anyway.

  • Pros
  • Powerful pedal-assist and throttle modes
  • 4” LCD screen
  • High max speed and range
  • Free worldwide shipping / 1-year warranty

Why do we like the ENGWE EP-2 500W?

The monster-truck style tyres are the highlight. If you’re looking for an all-terrain electric bike then the ENGWE EP-2 500W is for you. Though not designed for it, it can handle the daily city commute, but it feels much more at home on grass, sand, or going over rocky ground.

Macwheel LNE-16

8.5/10

Macwheel LNE e-bike

Macwheel on Amazon

The Macwheel LNE-16 is from a trusted brand and for its humble price tag, it packs a punch.

For $500 USD (£365 / 412€) retail you get a sleek, foldable electric bike with decent specs. The aluminium alloy frame houses the 250 W motor and 36V lithium-ion battery. This adds to the streamline design of the bike as they’re both out of sight.

The e-bike has a top speed of around 25 kph (15 mph) on motor power alone and can take you as far as 30 km (18.6 miles) without pedaling. As well as the throttle mode, the bike has pedal-assist and traditional modes. Pedal-assist has 5 levels of assistance and traditional mode means your legs do all the work.

Macwheel made the LNE-16 as an electric bike for commuting. So it pairs best with paved, fairly flat roads. But it can certainly hold its own on grass, gravel, and dirt. The bike doesn’t have added suspension but the 41 cm x 4.8 cm (16” x 1.9”) tyres absorb enough bumps to make riding comfortable.

  • Pros
  • Cheap electric bike
  • Sleek design - hidden motor/battery
  • Portable (foldable handlebar stem)

Why do we like the Macwheel LNE-16 e-bike?

The standout features are the sleek design and the price. On top of that, it’s foldable and is very good compared to other bikes in its range. It’s definitely one to consider if you’re looking for something reliable and cheap for commuting to and from work or school.

Swagtron EB-5 Pro Electric bike front
Swagtron EB-5 Pro Electric bike back

Swagtron on Amazon

For around $500 USD (£365 / 412€) you can be cruising on the Swagtron EB-5 Pro. It’s the cheaper electric bike that is made like an expensive one - in terms of parts at least.

With EB-5 Pro’s “throttle mode” (no pedaling required) it can reach a top speed of 25 kph (15.5 mph). Depending on the rider’s weight and the riding surface, this e-bike can potentially go faster than this.

The e-bike itself weighs 16.8 kg (37 lb) and can carry a rider up to 120 kg (264 lb). So it isn’t light and you wouldn’t want to carry it long distances. But on the upside, it has a strong and sturdy chassis and is compact when folded down.

The Swagtron EB-5 Pro is kitted out with a 36V lithium-ion battery that takes around 4-5 hours to fully charge. This can take the electric bike 25 km (15.5 miles) before the battery is flat. The battery is also replaceable so if you buy an extra battery you can go twice as far!

As well as this it’s a folding bicycle. It folds down to half its size - great for putting in the boot (trunk) of a car or for storing in the office.

  • Pros
  • Budget e-bike
  • Foldable and portable
  • Removable/replaceable battery
  • IPX4 water resistant

Why do we like the Swagtron EB-5 Pro?

We like the Swagtron EB-5 Pro for two main reasons - quality and price.

It’s made of sturdy materials that will last. The 36V motor is typical for many electric bikes that are double the price. And the battery is replaceable. And all this in a folding electric bike!

It’s the ‘cheap’ electric bike. While it isn’t cheap compared to electric scooters or hoverboards, it is one of the more affordable e-bikes on the market.

Ancheer e-bike

ANCHEER on Amazon

ANCHEER has created an interesting hybrid bike. It’s half electric mountain bike and half electric road bike. And it rides pretty well - especially considering its price point.

Combined, these features can take the bike as far as 25 km-36 km (15-22 miles). And with 3-5 pedal assist settings depending on the bike model, you can get around without breaking a sweat.

Power and battery packs aside, the bike has a 21-speed gear system allowing a comfortable ride for beginners as well as experts. So if you’re out of battery or you want an increased workout, this e-bike works well as a regular bike too.

  • Pros
  • Low price
  • 3-5 pedal assist modes
  • Throttle power (no pedaling needed)

Why do we like the ANCHEER electric bike (250 W / 500 W)?

It’s the fun and easy e-bike experience. E-bikes can be expensive, and the ANCHEER electric bike is a great intro bike. It’s not top-of-the-line, but it can hold its own both on-road and off. And for the price, there are few better. Definitely worth considering.

Final Thoughts

How do you decide between foldable e-bikes, electric mountain bikes, and fat tire e-bikes?

It comes down to personal preference and what you want an electric bike for. The classic e-bike for commuting is the foldable option, as it’s compact and generally more lightweight.

For mountain trails, you will want to consider an electric mountain bike. Fat tires give you extra grip if you’re riding in colder, wetter places with frost or snow, or for more difficult bike trails.
